Artist Statement
Tension and Order: A Digital Evolution of Modernist Principles explores the intersection of furniture design and sculpture by digitally reinterpreting modernist ideals through contemporary tools. The series emphasises pre-tension and balance within each composition, blurring the line between functional objects and sculptural forms. The compositions focus on the interplay of form, colour, and structure, redefining spatial relationships and echoing the graphic minimalism of De Stijl and Bauhaus while pushing these principles into new, digitally driven dimensions.
Technical Process
The creative process begins with precise digital reconstruction using 3D modelling software, where every geometric detail and texture is crafted by hand. This process is not about simple replication but transformation. It examines how modernist principles can be evolved and reshaped through a digital lens. Tension and Order also reflects the transition from man-made to machine-made and now to digitally crafted forms, where technology enables an unprecedented precision and creative freedom beyond the constraints of physical materials.
The series starts with clean, rendered forms that establish clarity and simplicity. From there, the work evolves as I deconstruct these forms, breaking them down and reconfiguring them into compositions that introduce pre-tension. This is a calculated balance that feels on the verge of resolution. Through repetition, scaling, and alignment, the designs stretch the boundaries of modernist ideas, transforming them into sculptural forms that are dynamic and contemporary.
Composition and Aesthetic Tension
Each composition balances linearity with dynamic movement, playing with rhythm, contrast, and spatial relationships. Ordered sequences and repetitive structures reflect systematic design, while shifts in scale and unexpected juxtapositions inject energy and tension. This pre-tension gives the works their emotional resonance.
Lighting plays a crucial role in amplifying this tension. The way light interacts with surfaces, whether it defines sharp edges, casts deep shadows, or softly washes across planes, intensifies the sculptural quality of each piece. The interplay between light and material blurs the distinction between the digital and physical, making the compositions visually compelling and spatially immersive.
Aesthetic Strategy and Conceptual
While the visual language of Tension and Order is rooted in modernist minimalism, the approach pushes these principles into volumetric space through digital techniques. Bold block colours, high-contrast lines, and geometric forms are translated into three-dimensional compositions that bridge graphic design and sculpture. This transformation doesn’t simply recreate De Stijl aesthetics but evolves them. It imagines how these principles might manifest in a digital framework, where precision is driven by technology rather than industry.
The series centres on tension. This exists between original forms and their deconstructed elements and between shifts in scale and abstract reconfigurations. This pre-tension creates an unresolved energy within each piece, inviting deeper engagement. The compositions redefine spatial narrative, creating pure visual and spatial expressions that resonate with modern architectural aesthetics.
Conclusion
Tension and Order reinterprets historical design principles through the medium of contemporary digital technology, challenging traditional boundaries between design and art. Through meticulous 3D modelling and processes of deconstruction, re-composition, and precise lighting, the series explores the intersection of function and abstraction. It pays homage to modernist design while envisioning how its ideals can be extended in a digital age.
